Fire Code Enforcement

 

 

 

    

 

     The fire department continues in its efforts to enforce Fire Codes on structures within the city.  This has become a greater challenge due to lack of staffing of the department.  The department annually conducts a pre-fire plan on each business within the city.  The three shifts fill out a check off list of possible infractions they are to check for.  If a particular business has an infraction such as a locked or blocked exit they are advised to remedy the situation while the firefighters are on site.  The Shift Commander then turns in the paperwork and I do a follow up inspection.  I also answer complaints from citizens on particular situations and routinely do spot inspections.  In 2009 with the help of the Fire Committee, Ordinance Committee and Council the City Fire Prevention and Fire Codes were updated and re-written so that they would mimic what the State Fire Marshal’s Office enforces.  This will help the department with its efforts.
